A TRUE Magazine Exclusive: Sits with Twista

Yo what’s going on world. This is your man Scholar with True Magazine aka @TeamScholar on Twitter. And right now I have the one and only big homie from the Chi. The legendary Twista. Twista took a minute out of his busy schedule to holla at us over at True Magazine. Twista what’s up my G?

Twista: Man I got a few things in the works. Just in general I’m dropping music just to be dropping it b/c I love doing it. But you know I got certain projects coming out such as the the “Dark Horse” project which is my new album which features the legendary Traxster, DJ Tight Mike, and a few other producers. I also got the GMG Squad(Get Money Gang/Get Money Group.) You can check them out atwww.Twista.com or on twitter at @TwistaGMG to see what’s going with all the artist that’s on GMG. I also have a mix tape about to drop with DJ Don Cannon, and you can also find me on a bunch of features. Just a lot going on….

Me: So you over there working my G. Gotta respect your grind big homie.

2:Twista: Even though I’ve had success in the music industry I think sometimes people sometimes look at me as the dark horse

in certain situations. And I tend to surprise people; you know the dark horse is the one least expected to pull out on top. I look at myself as the dark horse of this industry.

Me: Deep concept indeed Twista.. You always come and when you come you come hard. So us here at True Magazine want to say salute to everything you doing my G.

Twista: Awww man Thank you Scholar I appreciate that man. For real

Me: No problem No problem at all Twista.

3: Twista: Um not lately. The last thing I did was got a verse from Tyga. It came out on a couple of projects but he actually gave it to me first. The verse that I got on the song “Gucci,Louie,Prada” That’s the last thing I did with one of the guys over there. I got something up and coming with Mystical soon and I also did a project with Busta(With Cash Money) So I’m definitely affiliated with them and like getting it in with them.

Me: That’s what it is my brother. You gotta network and build.

Twista: Yes sir you gotta click up. Gotta click up.

4: Twista: Man balance, wisdom,a lot of that. You know I think one the things personally that’s missing from the game is a true sense of history in hip hop from generation to generation. I think the respect has to be there both ways. The older artist need to respect the grind and the way that the new artist think and do they thing. And the new artist need to respect the grind and the way that has been paved for them by the older artist. I think that whole bridge is missing but I think that’s what they can bring to the table. Cause the vets can definitely hold their own…. Like what you gonna say if you got a label and you have new artist but you also have Twista,Scarface, and E 40…. What the fuck(laughs on both ends.) And us as older artist have to look at the new age artist as those are your kids; you raised them. And as we see them coming up we have to teach them what’s going on and big up them as well with what they do. Like one of the biggest things I saw when I walked the red carpet for one of the BET awards they had “The Hip Hop History Book” that showed all the original rappers and where they were from and then this artist came and this artist came and so on….. I think every artist in the game should have this book and read it.

Me: This is true… That’s very well put Twista. Myself and a few of my industry peers always talk about how a big percent of new age artist don’t really pay homage to the pioneers of the game. So is a great point/answer.

5: Twista: I mean some things look obvious. You know they obviously associate me with him b/c some of my biggest hits came from working with him and then we are from the same area. You know so the math all adds up. It’s just dope to look at it in that sense. And I think they can see it as far as me doing it with other people they know that I’m rooted with. You know wherever I land is where I land. I’m not really concentrated on that right I’m just concentrated and focused on making dope music and staying true to the Twista sound and giving people something fresh and new.

Me: Good stuff indeed bro.

6: Twista: Like if I could go out the box you probably gonna hear me with Jerimiah, a few people like that. Definitely my girl Tia London. You know that’s somebody I get it in with that the whole world is not too familiar with who is from Chicago who is up and coming. You can check her out on my last project “2012.” Yo know the radio jams I make them shits like the back of my hand man.(laughter from me) I like to make sure I keep things balanced being that I have things for the radio and the club and also the streets. Ya feel me.

Me: Indeed I do. Going back to Tia London she is definitely a beast; very humble and talented sister indeed. Her and I actually speak often on Twitter. So hat’s off to you and Ms. London on the “2012” project. Very deep record!

7: Twista: Umm just like his heavy bass sound. His feel for how he eq’s music. You know I have a certain ear for music and I listen for a sound that I like. I tend to just fuck with him heavy. Then as I got to know him I realized how much of a genius he was and grater appreciated his input on music and I just kept working with him throughout the years. You know he is always one of the innovaters as a producer he is always bringing something new to the table. So I look up to him in that regard.

Me: Bet that Twista. So its like a marriage how you and Traxster vibe together right?!

Twista: Man…… fo sho. Me,him, the addition of my DJ Tight Mike who been coming with some stuff he produced “Gucci,Louie,Prada.” a few of my other joints “Make you Moan”,”Whip Game Proper.” You know so we get it in over here at GMG.

Me: Not mad at the grind and chemistry at all Twista. Good stuff indeed.

8: Twista: Ahhh….. that’s a couple of good ones right there Scholar. Let me see…. Dam you got me Scholar…. Ok Ok I got it the first two that pop to my dome for some reason are: Is the session when I recorded “Is this the End” with Bad Boy Music when I was over there with Diddy we recorded “Is this the End” with Ginuine and another one that pops in my head is “Lavish.” That was with Pharrel down in Miami. That studio session was fun; I got to really see how much of a true genius he was with music. The other one is when I recorded “Is that Yo Chick” with Jay Z.

Me: I can imagine the fun and creativity in all those sessions…. All that talent working to create great music. Every person you mentioned are still making moves/making things happen.

9: Twista: Man, definitely as one the ones who opened it up for Chi town! You know really when you get into the history of it and how long I been in this game and how I introduced some of the biggest acts of Chi town. But for me the memory I want is longevity. I want people to look up and think “You know what I did not really realize how long Twista was doing this shit.” and then they start to think that it’s really only a handful of rappers who came out when I came out who can still get on a track with a youngin and still sound fresh and just kill it. So yeah I want people to remember me as a artist who had longevity.

Me: Solid answer brother Twista.

10: Twista: Ummm I mean you gotta stay fresh. To me you gotta pay attention to whats going on. Fortunately for me I just like music and hip hop and new artist. So when I hear new artist coming out I listen cause I’m like a fan; so I think if your gonna do this and like doing it you should be a fan of the music. That alone will help keep you current. You know but some of us have our own sound like myself I do what I do and people just appreciate me and the art I bring to the table. But definitely I might pay attention to what a Jadakiss is doing or a Kanye spit this flow like this; let me get on this type vibe. Or Big Sean spit this type vibe let me make sure I’m up on this sound not necessarily doing what they doing but making sure your sound is current.

Me: That’s what it is Twista; another great answer from you.

11: Twista: In Music?

Me: In general,in life,in music, I mean we can split the question in sections. But if you had to say there was an accomplishment, what is your biggest or the biggest accomplishment year to date?

Twista: I would say taking something that I love to do like music and wanting to make it in music. I’d have to say just being able to make it and succeed in something that was not promised to me and be able to take care of and provide for my family.

Me: Major answer Twista.

Outro: Well this concludes our interview big homie. On behalf of True Magazine and myself “Thank you” Twista for taking the time to speak with us and let our readers/subscribers know whats going on with you and what to expect in the future.

Twista: No problem Scholar. It’s all love man!

Twista drop for True Magazine: What up! You already know what it is. This yo boy Twista right here getting it in with the homie Scholar from True Magazine cause we stay true ya digg!!!! Church….

Writer: Scholar
