Freddie Gibbs Drops Surprise Album “Freddie”

Indiana’s own Freddie Gibbs surprised us all on Thursday with a trailer posted to his twitter account teasing a new self-titled album “Freddie”, supposed to drop the same night, and he delivered on his word. The album (including a Teddy Pendergrass inspired art direction) was released on all streaming sites at midnight on Friday, and it did not disappoint. With a majority of the production coming from Kenny Beats, the album is full of aggressive, dark sounds that align with the popular sounds used today.

Feature wise, Gibbs got LA’s most popular up-and-comer 03 Greedo to appear on “Death Row”, a sort of tribute track/sample of Eazy E.  Cassie Jo Craig appears on the last track “Diamonds 2”, which also features a credit from Gibbs’ daughter, Irie Jane Gibbs. What the album may lack in features, Gibbs more than makes up for with his picturesque storytelling and rabid lyricism, with standout tracks like Automatic and Diamonds 2. Gibbs was able to take today’s sound and put a street storytelling twist to it, an album you definitely will want to listen to.
