GOOD Music gives us great music with this “Cruel Summer” compilation. Nowadays, it’s rare that an album drops that we can consider a classic from it’s release date. Then again, when aren’t Kanye West produced albums considered a classic? Let’s skip the commercial tracks that we’ve been hearing lately including “Clique” and “Mercy.” Not that those songs aren’t hits but most of us already know them word for word. “Cruel Summer” includes a bunch of features that we would never expect including: Mase, R Kelly, Ghostface Killer, and Raekwon. This album definitely reminds me of an old Wu-tang album with multiple hot artists competing on the same track over raw ass beats. I bet only 1 out of 10 of you would even recognize the Ghostface Killer sample from the track “New God Flow.” As a hip hop head, I’ll spill the beans and you can thank me later. Ye samples the track “Saturday Night Uptown” off of Ghosts classic album “Supreme Clientele.” I feel like I should personally dap him up for that Tony Starks feature. Shortly, you’ll see what I’m saying. Playful tracks like “The Morning” features many big artists and is part of the formula for a classic album. Raekwon initiates the track with a killer sample. Versus falso come from Pusha T, Common, 2 Chainz, Cyhi the Prynce, Kid Cudi, and D’Banj. Then comes “The Cold” formerly known as (“Theraflu” before the backlash) featuring DJ Khaled. With a beat hard enough to have you with the nasty face. For some reason, I’m stuck on that 1 liner about Kris Humphries “lucky I ain’t have Jay drop him from the team.” That line is so ill to me because it could have been a reality. On the next track “Higher” we hear traces of good ol’ Murda Mase with a melodic hook where hit maker The Dream sings “We’re high than a mother f*****.” Mase even take a subtle shot at Loon stating “you know I ain’t muslim my nigga, I’m about my bacon.” I don’t know how I feel about hearing Mase saying the ungodly “N word,” (again) but I’m sure every blog will pick it up, ensuring fans to press rewind and converse about it. Mission accomplished Mase. Personally, I think Cyhi the Prynce killed the next track “Sin City” which also features John Legend, Teyana Taylor, Travis Scott, Ye himself, and Malik Yusef. I must admit the vibe of this track had me hit playback twice in a row. For some reason this song feels more like a movement or an anthem. The song “The One” has that uplifting feeling with Big Sean, 2 Chainz, Kanye and the very talented singer Marsha Ambrosius. Next on the tracklist is “Creepers” featuring Kid Cudi. Where he switches up the mood of the album totally. Though he kills it melodically, this is probably the only song that I didn’t connect with from this project. The John Legend and Teyana Taylor duet “Bliss” is definitely one to mess up your back track button. With a sound not like any other on the album and sort of a rock and roll feeling to it. Both of them display their range enough that you can even feel the vibe from the studio session. Last but certainly not least, Ye remixes the Chief Keef hit track ” I Don’t Like.” Grabbing Pusha-T, Big Sean, and Jadakiss. Overall this compilation album is a good move for GOOD Music.
