Get to Know: Coke Bumaye

With his new single, “Separate” Coke Bumaye is poised to join the ranks of illustrious Mississippi rap legends.  Produced by Hollywood Luck, the single features a hypnotic sample of Janet Jackson’s classic, “Go Deep” flipped over hard-driving drums and kicks that reel in the listener followed by lyrical dexterity rarely heard in today’s mumble rap landscape. “Separate” is the second single from Coke Bumaye’s highly-anticipated debut studio album, Separation, following up two mixtapes that have helped him cultivate a loyal fan following. 

Since his first project, Translation, in 2010 he has consistently released several projects each year, setting the bar higher and higher for himself culminating in a 2015 award for Best Lyricist at the Jackson Hip Hop Awards. Separation will launch Coke Bumaye into the national rap sphere alongside fellow Mississippi legends, Big K.R.I.T and David Banner. He appeared with the legendary Banner on the mixtape that preceded the critically-acclaimed album, The Godbox. Bumaye shined on “Pain” with K.R.I.T., and Tito Lopez as well as on “Blow in the Wind” from the mixtape, Before the Box. 

Born Corey Stokes from the southside of Jackson, Coke Bumaye got his rap name from his childhood nickname, Coke and the infamous chant “Ali Bomaye” during the fight between Muhammad Ali and George Foreman in 1974. The name fits his lyrical prowess and ambitious rap dreams. On “Separate,” Coke Bumaye brags between the verses while letting the sample serve as the hook, he raps, “Let’s separate the good from the great/Let’s separate the real from the fake.” And that’s just what this single does. “Separate,” is the single that will turn a local Jackson, Mississippi rapper into a national sensation.
