In the world of Dominican street music, particularly in the popular genre of Dembow, one would have to search rather hard for female artists beyond the underground. Times may be changing now with the rising success of La Insuperable. Not exactly new to the game, as she has been paying her dues in the scene for the past few years, she is now showing up as the headliner in shows across the country. At first glance some may be quick to dismiss her work and credit her success to the undeniable sex appeal and uniqueness of her image. Indeed, she is aware of her assets, and the effect it has on her male audience, but she is maintaining in the game and catching wreck for her skills as an artist. The video for “Que Me Den Banda” (Give Me a Band) is proof as it features cameo’s from almost every major artists in the scene. From multi-genre pioneer El Mayor to fellow female artist La Materialista, she receives a glowing endorsement from the community, further establishing her as a serious contender in the game. In other words, baby got back plus the skills to back it!
