From the moment he was born to now, religion has always played a part in Christian hip hop songwriter and artist Lecrae. He uses his passion for religion, hip hop, and RnB as the beginning of his music career. Lecrae begins to write for an R&B group formed by his neighbors at the age of 11, teaming up with Ben Washer to find his record label ‘Reach Records’ and then releasing his first album ‘Real Talk’ (2004) which reached No. 29 on the Billboard Gospel Albums chart.
Since his debut ‘Real Talk’, he has gone to released a series of mixtapes, LP’s, and to become the first Christian hip-hop to reach #1 on the Billboard’s Gospel Charts for his third album ‘Rebel’ (2008). He also goes on to win one Grammy for ‘Gravity’ (2013) in the category, Best Gospel Album, and two more Grammys for his song “Messengers” (featuring for KING & COUNTRY) in 2015.
In 2020, Lecrae released his latest album ‘Restoration’ which provides the sound of Christan rap (fast trap beats) while touching on topics like the difficulties of marriage, depression, and fame. Since the release of “Restoration”, Lecrae has received two 2021 Grammy nominations this year. His first nomination is for “Sunday Morning” featuring Kirk Franklin in the category of Best Christian Contemporary Music Performance/Song and his second nomination is for his feature on Rodney ‘Darkchild’ Jerkins’ gospel benefit song “Come Together”. Proceeds from this song benefit the two organizations: MusiCares COVID-19 Relief Fund and Compassion International who provide aid to those in the music community affected by the pandemic.
