Not as common as you think-Dominican Weed Joint by Quimico Ultra Mega puts more pride in the plant than usually seen

There’s a single out here in the DR that’s been blowin’ up for a couple of months now..leaving a cloud of smoke that lingers as long as the beat stays in your head. Tengo Una Mata (en mi casa) or I gotta tree (in my house) by Quimico Ultra Mega is a track detailing a home shop grow-op of that hi-grade no bulto (Dominican slang for bull..you get it) chronic. While weed songs ain’t nothin’ new in the Hiphop world, it is not a very common practice here, in this end of the Caribbean. Not only is weed still highly illegal with unusually severe punishments, it is also generally frowned upon by society, even amongst the youth. Even in Dominican rap music there is more focus on expensive bottles and little white lines than on keeping the high natural. It’s not that nobody blazes here it’s just it’s not that public and more discreet than you would expect all the way here in 2016. Smoking herb here doesn’t enjoy the amnesty and understanding that it is gaining around the world whether illegal, de-criminalized or completely legit. Cops won’t excuse it, kids are shamed for it and you don’t see it or smell like you do in many others area in the Caribbean or planet in general. It is viewed by many as a low class behavior activity and the general consensus to this is intimidating to those who may otherwise be open minded to the idea of lil’ puff here and there. Which is why beyond the sound and lyrics this track should be noted. It might seem like an ordinary blaze anthem to the average Hiphop listener but out here it is a sign of progress in it’s attitude towards this often helpful and gentle plant with proven medicinal benefits. To add to this point, it seems everybody can recite the lyrics to this one, as though this track is empowering folks to be less ashamed of their love for sweet Mary Jane. Even folks that don’t partake are versing along to it. You don’t have to be a weed smoker to appreciate the existence of this track in the context of where and when it is made. It is a bold move not just legally but socio-culturally as well and regardless of what your musical taste is ,one can’t deny that taking the shame and fear out of Marijuana is long overdue out here. May tradition continue!
