One of the biggest hip hop feuds in 2017 was the back and fourth digs between Nicki Minaj and Remy Ma. For those unaware of how it all started, the history between these two female MCs goes back all the way to 2007. During that time Nicki released her freestyle “Dirty Money” off her Playtime mixtape. The song includes the line “Tell that bitch with the crown to run it like Chris Brown” over a beat from Terror Squad’s “Yeah Yeah Yeah.” While the song was never confirmed to be taking jabs at Remy Ma, a Terror Squad MC, Remy still took it personal. This eventually lead to a confrontation between the two of them at a release party.
Remy Ma was serving six years in prison when Nicki’s career really started to pop off in 2009. Not much was heard from Remy and the feud faded into the background. Upon Remy’s release from prison in 2014, she claimed that their fight was over and congratulated Nicki on all her success. Later that year, Ma free-styled over Minaj’s “Truffle Butter” beat. She also imitated Minaj’s “Monster” verse during a cypher.
The feud really took off again when Remy was trying to revive her rap career. Remy Ma released “Shether,” a song riddled with personal attacks from Minaj’s fake “rear-end” to her brother, who has been accused of sexually assaulting a child. The cover art also shows a cut up and bloodied Nicki Minaj barbie.
Eyes were glued to Nicki’s social media waiting for a response. Nicki remained silent for quite some time and stayed busy working on her features and new music. In March Nicki finally responded to Remy Ma’s “Shether” diss, enlisting Lil Wayne and Drake on “No Frauds”. The song sold 78,861 copies during the first week of its release debuting at #1 on R&B/Hip-Hop sales charts and #14 on the US Billboard Hot 100.

The feud is still very much ongoing, which Remy Ma confirmed during the 2017 BET Awards when she beat Nicki’s seven year streak for best female Hip Hop artist. During her acceptance speech she stated: “Y’all bitches got fat while we starved/Shots in your ass, pads in your bras. Y’all some liars it ain’t no facts in your songs/And yeah, that crown is coming back to the Bronx.”
