TRUE Magazine Exclusive Q&A with Young Giantz

West coast duo Young Giantz are the sons of rap pioneer Playa Hamm of the Penthouse Players Clique (who was signed by Easy E toRuthless/Priority Records in 1992). They talked about their recent Priority Records release, 2000 Ninetiez, which is a respectful tribute to the classic G Funk era of West Coast hip-hop.

Q&A:

1) In the intro there was audio of news reporters speaking about violence and racism in South Central LA, what message did you want your listeners to get from that?

2) What was the inspiration behind 2000 Ninetiez EP?

Q2: The Music We was Creating Felt Exactly Like “2000 NINETIEZ” GIVING That ENERGY we WAS Influenced by While Also Being Current with The Space Music Dwells In Today..

3) How did you acquire the sound of G-Funk and how do you plan on keeping the G-funk era alive?

Q3: We were Ages 5 and 8 Listening To G Funk. It’s In Us. SO Naturally We Adopted that Feeling once we Decided To Be music Artists. ALSO Working With Genius Producers Jellyroll, Dae One and Ace Man Helps A lot. WE plan On Keeping It ALIVE by Staying Alive…

4) What is your position on conscious rap vs trap?

Q4: We Really DON’T Think About It. It’s All Rap.

5) How do you stay honest in your lyrics while keeping the music appealing?

6) Was there ever have a point in your career where you thought music was not worth it? If so, what was it? what kept you going?

Q6: Bigg Joe West: To Be Honest, Yes.. We’ve Been Doing Music Since We were Kids. THERE was A Point When I Felt Like “Damn, How Is People Not Fucking With Us this Music Is Really Good” My Brother Deuce Mac as well as My Father Being Confident And Fearless Helped me Snap OUt Of it..

7) On your track “Gangsta Luv”, you are describing your kind of relationship goals. On social media, there are a lot of people talking about how they want to be in love and have relationships that look like others. How do you define what a real relationship goal is and what to look for when seeking one?

Q7: it’s Funny How People Say They Want To Have Relationships That Look Like Others When They Not Really Seeing What That Relationship Really is. Sad Part Is We Want What We Like And Not what’s better For us. I think Seeking a FRIENDSHIP is Key To A successful Partnership. LOVE LIVES IN FRIENDSHIPS…

8) Bigg Joe West, you once talked about how it is rare that artists show their “true identity”. How did you know what your true identity was? Have you or Deuce Mac had experiences that made you go astray from your true self?

Q8: I learned What My True Identity was When I Stopped Being Afraid To Be ME. WE Do Our Best With accepting Constructive Criticism. When it Looks Like Your Successful In Living Your Dream Everybody Has The Right Answer. WE never Astrayed From Being Us But We’ve Had Moments When We Thought We needed to Have A Certain Type of Record In order To Be Heard.

9) How do you feel about the recent removal of Robert Lee from the University of Virginia in Charlottesville? A decision motivated by the tragic incident in Charlottesville.
