The birth of Dj Khaled’s son Ashad, and his mayroic rise in HipHop and Pop culture, have greatly influenced his latest album “Grateful” which was released today. Khaled’s 10th studio album contains over 20 tracks with some of HipHop’s biggest names including Drake, Nicki Minaj, Future, Yo Gotti, Nas, JAY Z, Beyoncé, and many more.
My succinct description of “Grateful” would be brilliantly contrasted. The mix of classic samples and tough 808’s is harmoniously matched by equal participation from legendary rappers like Jadakiss, Fat Joe and Pusha T, with today’s more recent stars like Migos, Bryson Tiller, and Kodak Black. Initially I was concerned the album would simply be a mix of pop sounding hits that deviate from Khaled’s traditional representation of the gritty street vibe, but when “Good Man” & “Billy Ocean” came flooding through the speakers with harsh bars, over cold drums, my concerns were quickly lifted.
With a little something for everyone, Khaled proves he is still one of the best producers in the game, assembling tracks from top to bottom handling production, and artist placements throughout the spectrum of modern sound. Khaled’s sample chops from artists like Carlos Santana, and Them Two offer an authentic feel while higher dynamic records like “Don’t Quit” and “To The Max” provides dj’s with the fuel they’ll be looking for to keep dance floors packed.
Admittedly it will take longer than several hours of listening to pick up on all the nuances of the lyrics, and production. However based on first impressions this album is a must have. Stream “Grateful” on Spotify, or download the album on iTunes.
