The True, The Bad, The Ugly: Cardi B’s Infinite Glow Up

{:en}It’s inarguable that Cardi B had the best year of 2017.

There are the obvious ways she really came up, such as her marriage to Migos’s Offset, Migos being one of the biggest acts in American music, or her single ‘Bodak Yellow,’ that stormed a so-far dull summer and exploded from bumping late-night on the block in The Bronx straight into suburban living rooms. Cardi B is someone who works hard at everything she touches and has a pure, infectious appreciation for her 15 minutes, an opulent example of how to have fun without being an asshole about it.

Lowkey Cardi’s biggest accomplishment this year was becoming the first Dominican artist to reach #1 on Billboard’s Hot 100. ‘Bodak Yellow’ was the number one song in the country. She was the first woman in Hip Hop to reach the top of the charts since Lauryn Hill. The New York Times called it ‘the rap anthem of the summer.’ It was strange when I thought about it, strange in a good way, like Cardi B is really out here putting in her 10,000 hours trying to get her skill set up and setting good examples in the public eye.

She also won 4 BET Hip Hop Awards, including one for Hustler of the Year, an award that more symbolic of character than ability. She featured on other gold and platinum singles like G-Eazy’s ‘No Limit’ with A$AP Rocky and ‘MotorSport’ with Migos and Nicki Minaj. Everywhere you looked you saw Cardi B. If you missed when the ‘Bodak Yellow’ video dropped, you were reminded when she scrolled up your Instagram feed, poppin hot shit or screaming about how much she loves her sister, or if you missed her on the Internet you saw her on The Tonight Show With Jimmy Fallon. For somebody receiving unprecedented attention, she seems to be handling it well and exuding positivism, taking to her IG frequently to thank her fans and show them appreciation, telling girls to stay and school and being open about the things she’s been through in her life.

That type of personality can’t be scoffed at in popular culture. In the midst of hurricanes and President Trump, we always had Cardi B to be thankful for. Listen to her new single ‘Bartier Cardi’ with 21 Savage below.
